If you’d been wondering why the NBA hasn’t announced the stars who will be participating in this year’s H.O.R.S.E. contest at All-Star Weekend, it’s because there won’t be a H.O.R.S.E. contest at All-Star Weekend. The NBA confirmed to SBNation.com on Wednesday that it has killed the two-year-old contest.

Why? Well, anyone can see that it never got much traction, and wasn't too entertaining. Unless, of course, your idea of entertaining is a three-point contest before the real three-point contest, with players who really shouldn't be in a three-point contest. No, seriously: The 2010 edition turned into an actual three-point contest between Kevin Durant and Rajon Rondo because TNT was running out of time on the broadcast. There were hardly any creative shots either year the NBA held the contest, just long threes and longer threes. (The outdoor setting in 2009 did allow for "long threes from the top of a staircase," but ... kinda boring!)
↵Kevin Durant, then, becomes the only modern H.O.R.S.E. champion, as he won both years. The league has an entertaining HORSE tournament broadcast in the 1970s, but players these days either have no imagination or no will to do anything that might make them look either silly or get them injured. R.I.P. H.O.R.S.E. You won’t be missed.
