The statehouse in Pennsylvania recently proclaimed March 21 to be Sonny Hill Day, a terrific nod to perhaps Philadelphia's most influential basketball personality. Hill never played in the NBA, but his eponymous junior amateur league in Philly has helped mold some of the game's best players -- including Kobe Bryant -- over the decades. It was created in 1968 as a respite from the hard-scrabble childhoods many kids in Philly's urban core were faced with.

↵Oldtime fans may also recognize Hill as an NBA T.V. commentator in the ‘70s, and he remains a talk radio staple in the City of Brotherly Love.
