On The Myths Told About NBA Free Throw Shooting

Kevin Pelton of Basketball Prospectus has a tremendous investigation of free throw shooting at the NBA level; it’s well worth your time. Among the findings:

  • ↵↵European-bred players are not better free throw shooters than domestic products.
  • ↵Height matters, with evidence supporting both the theory that taller players have physical disadvantages in shooting and the idea that bigger players are more likely to be valuable despite crummy shooting.
  • ↵Free throw shooting in the NBA is as good as it has ever been.
  • ↵History presents only rare cases -- Chris Webber and Karl Malone are two -- of bad free throw shooters turning themselves into good ones while in the NBA.
