The Denver Nuggets and Oklahoma City Thunder went back-and-forth throughout the first quarter before Denver edged ahead in the waning moments. After Oklahoma City took a four-point lead, Denver answered with an 11-2 run to end the quarter, taking a 31-26 lead into the break.

J.R. Smith buried a three with under a minute to go, giving Denver the lead back after a hot start. Kenyon Martin followed a Raymond Felton miss with a thunderous dunk on the next possession as Denver headed into the break on fire.
Arron Afflalo had nine first quarter points to pace the Nuggets. Martin added seven points, with Chris "Birdman" Anderson adding six off the bench. Nene had four points and a team-high four rebounds.
Russell Westbrook led the way for the Thunder with a game-high 10 points in the first quarter. Kevin Durant had five points, but was just 1-4 from the field.
