Maybe the NBA wants to give fans a little local flavor with these playoff games they’re broadcasting on NBA TV. Or maybe they just don’t want to foot the bill for better, more objective play-by-play teams. Either way, it’s been sort of a disaster so far. Like, a little bias is fine sometimes, but on the NBA’s very own network? During the biggest games of the year? Is this the NHL?
The NBA TV Announcers Somehow Find A Way To Get Even Worse
It’s a joke.
...Not that it hasn’t been its own sort of ongoing, hilarious joke at the league’s expense. Just when you think the NBA TV announcers can’t get any more ridiculous, someone ups the ante. Last night it was Memphis’ broadcast team, imported to San Antonio to call Spurs-Grizzlies. Want to hear how they called San Antonio’s unreal, game-tying three-pointer?
DEAD. SILENCE.
Of course there was also the introduction of “Z-Bounds” into the mainstream. You can probably figure out what they mean there, but in case you’re a little slow, the Memphis broadcast team were careful to explain that a “Z-Bound” is what they call Zach Randolph rebounds.
As my friend Alex put it, "I hit my breaking point last night with Z-Bounds, Brevin Knight repeatedly referring to mike conley as Mike ("Mike doesnt need to rush that shot there" "great pass by mike") and calling O.J. Mayo 'juice'." It's bad enough so that you do a double-take watching the game, like, "Did they seriously just say that?"
All playoffs long on NBA TV, the answer is yes.
