No Championship Rings For The Mavs? ‘We’ve Got To Talk’ Says Dirk

“Rings are old school,” Mark Cuban said after the Mavericks won the NBA Title on Sunday. “You’ve seen it before: There’s guys who pick up the sweats and towels and they have these big, blingy rings. I’m like, ‘Rings are done. It’s time to take it to the next level.’”

Uhhh... Mr Cuban? Dirk’s on line one. “We’ve got to talk to him about that,” he said.

“I don’t think the last word has been spoken yet,” Nowitzki told the Associated Press. “We know he always wants to do something different, something bigger. But the ring is just so classic. I think I would vote for a ring.”

“I mean, I’m a man,” he added. “I don’t know how I’d feel about a bracelet.”

Jason Terry chimed in, too. “As a player and a historian of the game, you want the ring. You look at the Sports Illustrated cover of Bill Russell holding those rings. You’ve seen Phil Jackson’s rings. You want that ring. That means a lot. That’s a thing you can go to your grave with.”

And I see what they’re saying, but the Mavs players are selling Cubes short on this one. Yes, rings are what they’ve been dreaming about their entire career. But if Cuban’s going to take that away from them, you can bet he’s going to replace it with something that’s a thousand times more audacious and ridiculous. “Championship gulf streams”, anyone? “Championship islands”?

He could buy Micky Arison’s Carnival cruise ship empire and divide the fleet evenly among the players. Or he could just buy the Miami Heat. He could buy the NHL and let each player pick a team. The players have been waiting their entire career for a championship, but so has Mark Cuban, and he’s liable to do something spectacularly irrational here.

Of course, “awesomely hilarious and ridiculous” isn’t necessarily the goal for all the players. So maybe they can choose, then. Private jet/personal cruise ship/emerging country, or a championship ring? They say an NBA Ring is priceless, but how priceless is it really?
