Chris Sheridan is well-known to NBA fans as a longtime Associated Press reporter and for the last several years on of ESPN.com's men in New York City, where Sheridan covers the Knicks and allegedly smokes many cigarettes. Peter Vecsey is also well-known to NBA fans, mostly as a current NBA TV and former NBA on NBC talking head but also as a cranky crank for the New York Post, where his "Hoops du Jour" column is both must-read and as accurate as Toney Douglas in the playoffs.
ESPN’s Knicks Writer Sues Peter Vecsey For Libel Over Carmelo Anthony Spat
According to Forbes, Sheridan has sued Vecsey for libel.
Sheridan wrote something in December about the Knicks being in the driver's seat to get Carmelo Anthony from the Nuggets because 'Melo wouldn't sign an extension anywhere else. Vecsey wrote that Sheridan's report was "a fairy tale" and said something about a "fountain of misinformation."
That’s mean, and it might be libel, but it’s generally bad business for working reporters to sue over other working reporters over something they write. Especially when Sheridan could point to the marquee at Madison Square Garden, where Carmelo’s name is in lights. If the intent is to embarrass Vecsey, a jab in a tweet, blog post or TV spot would be much more effective, much cheaper and far less worthy of ridicule from jerks like me.
For the record, I also commented on Sheridan’s ‘Melo report in less-than-flattering fashion. But my jabs were more of the “Sheridan has a history of inflating the Knicks’ chances of getting a superstar” variety, and not the “he is a lyin’ liar” type Vecsey scrawled. I would like to hereby thank Mr. Sheridan for not serving me with a libel suit.
