We might need to put an end to the Sad Kendrick Perkins meme. Not because Perkins himself never smiles, because he still doesn't. Instead, it's because the Celtics players have finally realized that they mourned the trade-deadline loss of Perkins a little too much last season before losing to the Miami Heat in the second round of the playoffs.
Rajon Rondo Admits Celtics Put ‘Too Much Emphasis’ On Kendrick Perkins Trade
Here's Rajon Rondo's take to Marc Spears of Yahoo! Sports:
“It wasn’t like the man passed away or something,” Rondo said. “I think we put too much emphasis on it. It’s a business. He got traded. He’s very happy where he’s at. We still talk and I’m always going to have his back. It shouldn’t have affected us the way it affected us.”
Rondo was Perkins’ best friend on the team, and many feel he went into the tank as soon as Danny Ainge made the deal to send Perkins to Oklahoma City. He’d know if the Celtics put too much emphasis on Perkins’ departure, because he put too much emphasis on Perkins’ departure. When Rondo says the word “we” here, he’s probably referring mostly to himself.
It’s up to you, Mr. Celtics Fan, to decide whether to blame Rondo or Ainge here now that you know a little more about the situation. Your call.
