If you think it’d be difficult to find a stranger sports story than Paul Pierce being welcomed to China with a chocolate version of Paul Pierce, then you clearly aren’t giving China enough credit. Less than a week later, Paul Pierce would get a REAL lesson in Chinese insanity.
Paul Pierce, Michael Beasley, And A Reminder That China Is Insane
Pierce has been playing in China for the past week, and on Monday, both he and Michael Beasley played in an exhibition game, but wound up in the hospital with asthma attacks. NiuBball.com, a blog on Chinese basketball, translates the news out of China:
While playing in Shuangyashan, Heilongjiang province… Pierce and Beasley both suffered asthma attacks due to large amounts of fans smoking cigarettes inside the stadium. After the game, things got even more shocking when Beasley fell to the floor in his hotel and started to roll around in obvious pain, scaring everyone around half-to-death. At that point, there was no choice but to dial 120 (the number for an ambulance in China) and take him to the hospital.
Yes, you can smoke inside stadiums in China. So yes, the fans smoke. A lot.
But guys, Pierce’s asthma aside, this is Michael Beasley we’re talking about. Do you know how much extra smoke inhalation it must take to give Michael Beasley an asthma attack?
The Shuangyashan fans must’ve hit backdraft-levels over there.
