Jerry Sloan (remember him?) gave an expansive interview to Steve Luhm of the Salt Lake Tribune about what he's been up to since his abrupt retirement last February. As you probably expected, the question of whether the 69-year old Sloan will coach again came up. As you may not have expected, he didn't entirely closing the door on it.
Jerry Sloan Sounds Like He Might Want To Coach Again
“I’m sure some people would be concerned about my age, at this point. But I feel like I’m in terrific shape. I don’t know what that means. And that can change tomorrow, of course. But I feel good.”
Granted, in the actual story, Sloan did say he’s “not agonizing” over questions about a potential comeback. But he also said this:
“The camaraderie we had with the players and coaches all those years was special and now, all of a sudden, it stops,” he said. “There’s a void there, no question about that. But do I miss it that much? I’d say, ‘Not really.’ But we’ll see.”
There’s also two people who know Sloan best -- wife Tammy Sloan and longtime friend Danny Brown -- saying in the story that they wouldn’t be surprised if Sloan coaches again. The entire thing reads like a man who is trying to overcome his addiction to basketball, but might just succumb for one last thrill. On behalf of NBA fans everywhere, I hope Sloan succumbs.
