Danilo Gallinari will, in November, reach that all-important second contract. He and the Denver Nuggets are prepared to ink a four-year, $42 million Early Bird extension in advance of Wednesday's leaguewide deadline. That's right: just $42 million over four years, just under the $44 million I had predicted last week.
Danilo Gallinari Will Make Less Than Half Of What Carmelo Anthony Does
In comparison, Carmelo Anthony, the player that the New York Knicks acquired for Gallinari and others, will make $67.3 million ... over the next three years.
This isn't really apples and apples, because Anthony is further in his career and, as such, eligible for higher salaries under the league's maximum contract rules. But the Knicks knew that when they spent their clip on 'Melo, and Gallinari is roughly $5 million per year under the max for a player of his experience level. (Kevin Love's max deal is at $64 million for four years.)
‘Melo produces more points than Gallinari and relies less on others to create shots for him. He’s one of the very best isolation scorers in the league. But he’s also less efficient, has turned Amar’e Stoudemire into a Pip and is inconsistent defensively. And, yeah, he’s costs twice as much per season.
Score another point for Masai Ujiri and the Nuggets.
