Andrew Bynum injury: 76ers’ center still expected to play in season opener despite knee prodecure

Philadelphia 76ers center Andrew Bynum will undergo another procedure on his right knee in an attempt to be fully healthy for the team's regular-season opener, according to Dei Lynam of CSN Philadelphia. The treatment was already planned. It involves lubricating the knee joint, Lynam reports.

The hope is that Bynum returns by late October, which is the target date when his absence was first announced earlier this month. Bynum underwent Orthokine therapy in Germany in September, the same procedure Kobe Bryant had in the summer of 2011. The 76ers have held Bynum out of training camp and preseason as a means to aid his recovery.

Bynum was acquired by the 76ers in a four-team trade that sent Dwight Howard to the Los Angeles Lakers. Last season was Bynum's best as a pro, as he averaged 18.7 points and 11.8 rebounds per game. He played in all but six games last year, but missed 47, 32, 17 and 28 games, respectively, in the previous four seasons with different leg injuries.
