Stephen Curry injury: David Lee credits Warrior guard’s toughness

Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry missed the second half of Friday's 101-97 preseason win over the Portland Trail Blazers after another player rolled up on his surgically repaired right ankle late in the second quarter. Forward David Lee, who had team-highs with 24 points and eight rebounds, credited Curry's toughness in post-game comments:

“There were some times last year when he just rolled it on his own, whereas this time someone clearly rolled up onto his ankle. It could have happened to any of us. I think he wanted to show that he could come back into the game and show that he was OK, but coach was smartly saying it was pre-season and told him to go in the back. Steph’s a tough kid and I have no worries about his ankle. He’s looked great and he’s had great confidence with it the entire pre-season.”

Curry played 12 minutes in the first half, going 1-for-2 with four assists and two turnovers. After sitting out the season’s first preseason contest, Curry has averaged 18.8 minutes and 12.2 points per game.

Curry, the Warriors’ franchise guard, missed 40 games in the 2011-2012 season after having surgery in April. Curry suffered from consistent ankle trouble in a season that saw him average a career-low 14.7 points per game, prompting the exploratory procedure that cleared debris and scar tissue from his ankle.

The Warriors, now 5-1 in preseason play, have two remaining games. They play at the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday, then face the Phoenix Suns at home on Tuesday.
