San Antonio Spurs waive Eddy Curry
Is this the end of the road for the former NBA champion?
A year after his ample 7'0, 295 frame was instrumental in giving LeBron, Wade and Bosh a comfortable seat during time-outs, Eddy Curry was waived by San Antonio on Tuesday as they began the process of getting their roster down to 15.
Curry, a former No. 4 overall pick who once averaged 19.5 points and 8.1 rebounds a game in an NBA season, had been out of the NBA for two seasons when the Heat took a flyer on him in 2012.
Last year, in 14 games, he played a grand total of 83 points, scoring 30 points on 12-26 shooting and grabbing 12 rebounds.
He was always a skilled low-post player, but his inability to keep his weight under control has been his undoing in the NBA, as after his breakout season in 2006-2007, his minutes, attitude and conditioning all underwent a precipitous decline.
However, NBA teams are always willing to give a player with his combination of size and scoring ability another chance, so it’s too soon to say whether he’s warmed his last NBA bench.
The Spurs, somehow, will try to manage without him this season.
