Wednesday’s NBA preseason schedule: Revamped Lakers meet Clippers for 1st time

Dwight Howard and Steve Nash get their first taste of Los Angeles’ crosstown rivalry.

Stephen Dunn

Just as it appeared as if the Los Angeles Clippers -- the little brother of the Hollywood basketball scene -- might overtake the Los Angeles Lakers for the best team in the city, big brother went out and acquired Steve Nash and Dwight Howard, potentially asserting their dominance over the Clippers for at least another season. That will add fuel to the fire of what was one of the NBA's most fierce rivalries last season, one which will begin again on Wednesday when the two teams clash at the Staples Center at 10:30 p.m. ET. The game will be aired on NBA TV.

On the other side of the country, another inter-city rivalry will catch its first spark -- though not quite. The New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets, who will face each other in Brooklyn to open the season, will get their first looks at each other on Wednesday night. The game, though, is being played in Hempstead, N.Y., so each team's respective fan base will have to wait until the regular season to catch a glimpse of the matchup. The game tips off at 7:30 p.m. ET and will be broadcast locally on MSG.

Elsewhere around the league, the new-look Houston Rockets will travel to face Anthony Davis and the New Orleans Hornets at 8 p.m. ET on NBA TV. The Orlando Magic, still adjusting to the post-Howard era, will head up to face the Memphis Grizzlies at 8 p.m. ET. The Dallas Mavericks and Oklahoma City Thunder will reprise their first round playoff matchup in OKC at 8 p.m. ET, while the Washington Wizards take to the shores of Biscayne Bay to face the Miami Heat at 8:30 p.m. ET. The Minnesota Timberwolves, who are shaking out their rotation in the wake of Kevin Love's injury, will host the Detroit Pistons at 8 p.m. ET.
