NBA to redefine All-Star ballot slots for big men, according to report

In 15 NBA seasons, Tim Duncan has been voted to the All-Star Game 13 times.

Steve Mitchell-US PRESSWIRE

The NBA has revised its All-Star ballot, effective immediately. Instead of voting for two forwards and a center, this year fans will vote for three “frontcourt” players. Call it the “Tim Duncan Rule.”

For years, Tim Duncan's position has perplexed All-Star ballot-makers. Duncan was always on the ballot as a power forward, even though he was playing center for the Spurs. That didn't stop fans from electing him to the All-Star Game 13 times, but it may have denied another forward an opportunity to play on the team.

The shift is a response to a larger trend in basketball, as teams generally play smaller than they used to. This blurs the line between forward and center. Players like Kevin Garnett and Chris Bosh are part of this move.

The 2013 All-Star ballot will be available on Nov. 13, and this change will be incorporated. The game will be held on Feb. 17 at the Toyota Center in Houston.
