Knicks’ home opener vs. Heat to go as scheduled Friday despite Hurricane Sandy

The New York Knicks will open the regular season on Friday night against the Miami Heat.

Kirby Lee-US PRESSWIRE

The New York Knicks will host the Miami Heat on Friday night despite damage from Hurricane Sandy, according to an NBA official.

On Wednesday afternoon, New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg announced via press conference that the city recommended that the Brooklyn Nets cancel their home opener against the Knicks on Thursday due to side-effects from Hurricane Sandy. With subway systems still flooded and other modes of transportation left inoperable in the hurricane's wake, it was believed that getting to the arena proved too difficult to hold the game.

However, it appears that same concern does not apply to Friday night as the league is comfortable with allowing the game to be played.

The Knicks were originally scheduled to start the 2012-13 regular season as part of the first NBA game in the history of the newly constructed Barclays Arena in Brooklyn. As of this time, there has been no announcement as to when that game will be rescheduled.
