Mickael Pietrus signs with Raptors

Mickael Pietrus will sign with the Toronto Raptors after sitting for the first month of the NBA campaign, giving the struggling club a dependable backup at the shooting guard and small forward positions.

Steve Mitchell-US PRESSWIRE

The Toronto Raptors have reached a deal with shooting guard Mickael Pietrus, a move that will add some proven veteran depth to the wing positions at a squad that's struggled all year long.

The 30-year-old from Guadeloupe has come off the bench for most of his career, and is known for his strong on-ball defending and moderately dependable three-point shot. The 6'6 Pietrus is now in his 12th year in the league, having spent the majority of his early career with the Golden State Warriors before going to the Orlando Magic, where he was a key bench piece of the team that went to the 2009 NBA Finals. He spent last year with Boston, averaging 6.9 points and 3.1 rebounds.

The Raptors, currently riding a six-game losing streak, start DeMar DeRozan at shooting guard and Linas Kleiza at small forward while waiting for the return of Landry Fields from injury. DeRozan leads the team in scoring, but Kleiza hasn't brought much of anything. Eighth overall pick Terrence Ross is the first shooting guard off the bench, but he's still adjusting to the NBA level of play a bit.

The team is reportedly going to cut Dominic McGuire in order to make room for Pietrus. McGuire has averaged 2.1 points and 3.2 rebounds in 15 minutes of playing time a game
