Clippers vs. Cavaliers recap: Varejao, Irving double-double trouble for LA

Led by the backcourt of Kyrie Irving (24 points and 10 assists) and Dion Waiters (28 points) led the Cleveland Cavaliers past the Clippers Monday night in L.A., 108-101.

After losing a close game to Golden State on Saturday night, the LA Clippers wanted to put as much space as possible between themselves and the Cleveland Cavaliers. That's exactly what didn't happen.

The Cavs lead 84-78 going into the fourth quarter. The Clips pulled it as close at 3 points with 40 second to go; however, Cleveland’s wunderkind Kyrie Irving had other plans. Irving hit a three and sunk 1-of-2 free throws to ice the game for the Cavs, 108-101.

The Clippers ran into a two headed monster in Irving and Anderson Varejao. In addition to his end of game heroics, Irving scored 24 points and had 10 assists. Varajao wanted a double-double, too. He collected 15 rebounds and sunk 15 points. Dion Waiters lead the Cavs in points with 28.

LA’s Blake Griffin had a quiet night, by Blake Griffin standards, save a monster dunk at the end. The big man scored 20 points but only snatched 5 rebounds. Chris Paul was one assist away from a double-double with nine and 17 points. Off the bench, Jamal Crawford was second on the team in scoring with 19 points.

This is the second loss in a row for Los Angeles, dropping their record to 2-2. Cleveland is back at .500 with a 2-2 record of their own.
