Former NBA player Mehmet Okur officially announced his retirement from basketball on Wednesday. The 33-year-old center averaged 13.5 points and seven rebounds a game in 10 NBA seasons for the Detroit Pistons, Utah Jazz and New Jersey Nets.

The former NBA center officially announced his retirement on Wednesday at the age of 33.

Okur was plagued by injuries in recent years, and said he was retiring because those injuries kept him from playing at a high level.
”Once your body doesn’t allow you to be good as you were in the past ... I think it’s time to say goodbye to the sport you love very much, Okur said in his official statement regarding his retirement.
The Turkish-born big man won an NBA Championship in 2004 as a member of the Pistons before signing a six-year, $50 million contract with the Jazz, who he represented in the 2006-07 NBA All-Star Game. He played in 17 games for the Nets last season and was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers in the deal that put Gerald Wallace in a Nets' uniform. Okur was released by the Blazers last March.
