Popovich ‘disappointed,’ but accepts Stern’s decision

The Spurs coach wouldn’t say whether the team will choose to appeal the $250,000 fine.

US PRESSWIRE

Following a $250,000 fine from the NBA, San Antonio Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich told Jeff McDonald of the San Antonio Express-News he is "disappointed" in David Stern's decision to levy the fine.

On Thursday night, Popovich sat starters Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili for a nationally televised game against the Miami Heat in order to give the veterans rest for a long road trip. The Heat won the game, 105-100, and Popovich's decision came under fire.

Stern released a statement saying it was an “unacceptable decision” and that “substantial sanctions will be forthcoming” for the Spurs. On Friday, the Spurs received a $250,000 fine.

Popovich wouldn’t tell McDonald whether the team will choose to appeal the fine, saying that any further discussion with the NBA will be handled privately. Asked how he’d handle a similar situation in the future, the Spurs coach said, “I don’t have a crystal ball.”
