James Harden injury: Rockets star out vs. Spurs

The Houston Rockets guard is out with a sprained ankle.

Houston Rockets guard James Harden will not play tonight in a crucial game against the San Antonio Spurs, according to Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle.

Harden rolled his ankle on Saturday night against the Dallas Mavericks and while he remained in the game, Harden did not participate in practice on Sunday or in the shootaround on Monday. Harden led the team with 29 points as the Rockets lost to the Mavericks, 116-109, slipping to 9-10 on the season.

The veteran guard was acquired just prior to the start of the season in a big trade for the Rockets, who were counting on a lethal combination of Harden and Jeremy Lin to lead Houston into a new era. Harden leads the Rockets with 24.7 points per game, while Lin is averaging more than six assists per contest. The Rockets have four players averaging double-digit points per game and are No. 4 in the NBA in scoring, yet are currently No. 30 in team defense.

The Rockets host the Spurs at 7 p.m. CT at the Toyota Center.
