Kyrie Irving injury: Cavaliers’ star fractures jaw, will play with a mask

Cavaliers star Kyrie Irving suffered a fractured jaw on Friday, but he will be fitted with a protective mask and will play Saturday against the Knicks.

David Richard-USA TODAY Sports

Cleveland Cavaliers star Kyrie Irving fractured his jaw in Friday night's loss to the Milwaukee Bucks, but the point guard will not be forced to miss any time. Irving will be fitted with a protective mask and will be available when the Cavs face the New York Knicks on Saturday night.

Irving suffered the injury in the first quarter on Friday when he drove to the basket and was fouled hard by Luc Richard Mbah a Moute. Irving’s head hit the floor and he remained down for several minutes before hitting the two free throws and remaining in the game. He finished the night with 26 points on 9-of-23 shooting.

The fractured jaw is just the latest in a rash of injuries that Irving has suffered this year. The 2011 Rookie of the Year just returned to action on Tuesday after missing nearly a month with a fractured left index finger. And this offseason, Irving had surgery on his right hand after breaking it punching a padded wall in practice.

Irving has been magnificent this season when he has been on the court. The point guard is averaging 22.5 points, 5.7 assists and 3.6 assists in 34.8 minutes per game. Irving is shooting 45.5 percent from the field and 40 percent from three-point land.
