Knicks tried to trade Amar’e Stoudemire last summer, according to report

The New York Knicks reportedly tried to deal Amar’e Stoudemire on several occasions over the last year, with one GM saying they were giving him up “for free.” The team is 19-6 with Stoudemire yet to make his season debut.

The New York Knicks tried to get rid of Amar'e Stoudemire for very little in return this past offseason, reports Howard Beck of the New York Times.

The team had reportedly put together packages for Andrea Bargnani and Dwight Howard last season before the trade deadline, and this past summer told nearly every team in the league that Stoudemire was essentially "available for free," one executive told Beck. However, at 30 years old with knee problems and a max contract that lasts another three seasons, nobody bit even with little to lose.

Stoudemire was the crown jewel of New York's long-awaited free agent class of 2010, but quickly took a back seat when the team acquired Carmelo Anthony. That combination led to a pair of first-round playoff exits, including a 2011-12 season where Stoudemire was frequently injured and eliminated himself from a playoff series against the Miami Heat by punching a glass fire extinguisher case.

Now, the team is an Eastern Conference-best 19-6 with Stoudemire having sat the entire season after preseason knee surgery. The former superstar of the team has told media he’s willing to accept a bench role if that’s what helps the team win, with many speculating it would be best for the Knicks not to play him and Anthony simultaneously.
