The Kings moved to Sacramento back in 1985, joining the Golden State Warriors as the NBA's two Northern California teams. Just 90 minutes apart via Interstate 80 and with rabid fans in both home cities, the teams should have sparked a wonderful little rivalry.
CHART: Kings, Warriors Rivalry Has Never Gotten Started
While the teams have played each other tightly in recent years, that rivalry has never gotten started precisely because the Kings and Warriors have never been good at the same time. A chart showing the teams’ inability to dance is below the jump.
The filled areas are spans in which each team has been above .500. Since 1985-86, the Warriors have been above .500 for a few short spans. The Kings had one long run in the postseason, but were completely awful before and are completely awful again. Right now, Northern California is mired in the second looong run of mutual mediocrity; the teams are a combined 12-27 this season.
