LeBron James Just Keeps On LeBroning It

What makes people loathe LeBron James is not that he left the Cleveland Cavaliers for the Miami Heat. It's how he did it, with a stunning lack of awareness of how his actions would be perceived by Nike product consumers fans.

James is barely into year two of the Great Miami Heat Experience, but already the gears are turning and the machine is humming for the next move. It should surprise no one to hear that LeBron’s people are already sending messages to the owners of teams not called the Heat in relation to his 2014 free agency, as Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Yahoo! Friday.

As Woj points out, there is nothing impromptu about LeBron. He is as calculating and precise as MJ, just without that indefinable quality that makes us want to root for him. So with the Heat preparing to play the Cavs on Friday night, it’s hard to believe this statement from earlier this week on the possibility of returning to Cleveland was a coincidence:

“I think it would be great. It would be fun to play in front of these fans again. I had a lot fun times in my seven years here. I’m here as a Miami Heat player, and I’m happy where I am now, but I don’t rule that out in no sense. And if I decide to come back, hopefully the fans will accept me.”

What’s so fantastically LeBron about it is how tone-deaf he is to not one, but two fanbases. He tries to pretend the fallout from The Decision was no big deal for Cleveland fans while basically tipping his hat at Miami fans to confirm that he is, as they always probably assumed, a rental.

And, in perfect LeBron fashion, even in his attempt to calm their concerns he can’t help but let it slip.

“The fans of Miami shouldn’t be worried about anything at this point.”

“At this point.” Just so you know, that point will come sooner than later. in 2014, actually.
