Greg Oden Has Left Knee Surgery, Will Miss Rest Of Season

The Portland Trail Blazers announced Monday that Greg Oden, who hasn't played since 2010, underwent microfracture surgery today on his left knee, ending any chance he'll return for the 2011-2012 season. From the release:

“Initially, Greg was undergoing a procedure similar to the one he had a couple of weeks ago to have debris cleared from his right knee,” said Acting General Manager Chad Buchanan. “However, once the doctors were inside Greg’s left knee, they unfortunately found articular surface damage and determined microfracture was necessary.”

While this might be one of the least surprising news releases in history, it’s incredibly sad nonetheless. Oden was signed to a one-year deal this offseason, but this might mean he’ll be hard pressed to find a team next year. The Blazers have remained admirably loyal and supportive, but the once-promising center — who, we forget, averaged 11.1 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.3 blocks in 24 minutes a game as a 22-year-old — might not get a shot to play again in Rip City.
