NBA Trade Rumors: Warriors Could Swing For Fences With Dwight Howard Rental

The Golden State Warriors will attempt to be big players in the NBA trade rumors circuit, apparently, as the team has reportedly decided to give up quite a bit to acquire Dwight Howard from the Orlando Magic. The intriguing part, though, is that they're willing to give everything up even if Howard doesn't give them an assurance he'll play for them longer than the rest of the current season.

Howard is eligible to become a free agent at the conclusion of the season, likely limiting what the majority of his potential suitors are willing to give up to get him. The Warriors are going the opposite route, however, as Tim Kawakami recently wrote on his blog.

They’re willing to give up a huge chunk of their roster -- and most of their valuable players -- for Howard, and they’re willing to do that though they’d have zero assurance that Howard would even consider staying here beyond this summer, when he is eligible to become a free agent.

That’s a big bet to make. That’s a deep plunge to consider, or attempt.

(Side note: Lacob clearly wants a shot at home-field advantage when recruiting Howard to re-sign, and if worst comes to worse, if they acquire Howard and he still leaves as a free agent, that opens up massive cap space.)

If the Warriors are able to pawn the majority of their contracts off on the Magic in return for Howard, that might not actually be a bad plan. Being able to keep some of the young guys and building a whole new roster around them would probably be worth gambling that Howard would decide to stay in Golden State.
