Paul Pierce officially passed Larry Bird for second place on the Boston Celtics' all-time scoring list Tuesday night, eclipsing Larry Legend with a three-pointer early in the third quarter of Boston's 94-84 win over the Charlotte Bobcats.

Pierce entered the game trailing Bird by only nine points. The milestone may have been weighing on his mind early in the game as he shot just 3-for-10 in the first half, finishing with seven points. But with his first bucket of the second half, he made history, earning a standing ovation from the TD Garden fans.

Pierce finished the game with 15 points, giving him 21,797 for his career. It’s possible he may someday catch John Havlicek, whose 26,395 are the most in franchise history, but it likely won’t happen for another three or four years. Pierce ranks 27th on the NBA’s all-time scoring list, but he’s just 17 points shy of overtaking former teammate Gary Payton for No. 26.
