Stan Van Gundy Fired As Head Coach Of Orlando Magic

Stan Van Gundy has been fired as head coach of the Orlando Magic, the team announced Monday. In addition, Otis Smith, the organization's general manager and president of basketball operations, and the Magic have mutually agreed to part ways. CEO Alex Martins cited the Magic's first-round exit in each of the last two postseasons in his statement.

“They both brought die-hard dedication and an unmatched work ethic on a daily basis,” added Martins. “Their success is well documented, as the Orlando Magic has had the fourth best record in the NBA over the last five years, and entering the playoffs this year the third most playoff wins over that period of time. The disappointment of getting eliminated in the first round of the playoffs these past two seasons played a primary role in our decision, as we feel our momentum towards winning a championship has paused. We wish Otis and Stan all the best and we look forward to taking the next step towards winning that championship.”

Van Gundy spent five years with the Magic, compiling a 259-135 record. He helped lead the team to the 2009 NBA Finals where the Magic fell to the Los Angeles Lakers. Smith has been the team's GM since 2006, and in 2010 added "President of Basketball Operations" to his title.
