The Washington Wizards have the No. 3 pick in the upcoming NBA Draft. This fact alone indicates that the team had a pretty unsensational season, but the team's front office saw apparently enough promise in the way the team finished to keep interim head coach Randy Wittman around for another season.
Randy Wittman’s Return As Washington Wizards Coach All But Certain, According To Report
Randy Wittman will return to the Washington Wizards next season after ending this year as the team’s interim head coach.
Wittman was inserted as the team’s head coach following the firing of Flip Saunders due to a 2-15 start. It took the coaching veteran awhile to turn things around, but he was eventually able to pick up some momentum as the Wizards ended the season on a six-game winning streak.
The wins didn’t especially matter aside from pride at that point of the season, of course, but ESPN’s Ric Bucher reports that it was enough of a statement to get Wittman the role again next season.
Had the Wizards won the draft lottery and earned the right to draft Kentucky’s Anthony Davis, the cost of investing in a higher-profile coach might’ve been worthwhile, a source said, but with the Wizards still in rebuilding mode and the job Wittman did with their young players last season, the team will stand pat for now.
It’s unclear why Anthony Davis would have required a better coach than whichever player the Wizards end up choosing two picks later, but I guess that’s the way the cookie would have crumbled.
