Orlando Pro Summer League: Austin Daye Lights Up Magic As Pistons Defeat Magic

The Detroit Pistons limited the host Orlando Magic to 12 points in the fourth period of their Orlando Pro Summer League game Tuesday en route to earning a 79-74, come-from-behind victory.

Standout player: Veteran forward Austin Daye is probably overqualified for summer league, with 182 games and 24 starts across three NBA seasons. His experience showed Tuesday afternoon as he shot 8-of-10 from the floor, scoring 24 points in just 23 minutes. He also added six rebounds.

A 6-foot-11 forward with a guard's shooting touch, Daye presents matchup problems for opponents, and he schooled Magic rookie Andrew Nicholson by eluding him in pick-and-pop sets. He shot just 32.2 percent from the field for the Pistons in the lockout-shortened 2011-12 campaign, but if Tuesday's performance is any indication, he's returned to form and could contribute plenty for a rebuilding Detroit squad.

Honorable mention: Magic center Kyle O'Quinn finished with 11 points and six boards, and his hustle and activity level helped Orlando build its lead. O'Quinn badly outplayed and outworked fellow rookie Andre Drummond, who, as the ninth overall pick in the 2012 NBA draft, was selected 40 spots ahead of him.

Disappointing player: Second-year forward Justin Harper could not find the range against Detroit, missing 12 of his team-high 14 shot attempts, including all seven of his 3-point tries. The Magic dealt second-round picks in 2014 and 2015 to the Cleveland Cavaliers to secure Harper's draft rights, and right now, that investment doesn't appear wise.

Dishonorable mention: Drummond didn't make an impact at all for Detroit, with a meager three points, three rebounds and three fouls in 22 minutes. His backup, Yancy Gates, did far more to help Detroit's winning effort. The undrafted Cincinnati product posted 10 points and five boards, and the Pistons outscored the Magic by eight points with him on the floor.
