ORLANDO -- The Philadelphia 76ers tightened the screws defensively in the fourth quarter to rally past the Brooklyn Nets, 79-71, in the penultimate game of Orlando Pro Summer league play on Wednesday. Brooklyn remains winless in three tries during the summer exhibition series.
Orlando Summer League: Justin Holiday Leads Sixers Past Nets Despite MarShon Brooks’ 18 Points
Star player: Justin Holiday erupted for a game-high-tying 18 points and hit all four of his three-point tries for Philadelphia. The 76ers are in a strange position in this Summer League, with 2012 first-round Draft choices Moe Harkless and Arnett Moultrie out with injury. Their absences have given the guys with non-guaranteed deals a chance to take the spotlight, and Holiday has seized it.
Honorable mention: Bryant Dunston was productive in defeat for the Nets, scoring 14 points on eight shot attempts with no turnovers, to go with seven boards. Dunston is 26 and last played in Israel, so he may not get too long of a look from NBA scouts, but the 6-foot-8 forward proved he can play.
Disappointing player: Nets centers Jeff Foote and Garrett Stutz combined for two points on 0-of-8 shooting, with five fouls. Neither looks athletic or big enough to stick in the NBA.
Dishonorable mention: Lavoy Allen made a name for himself for the Sixers in the 2012 Playoffs for his defense against Kevin Garnett, earning him a new contract with Philly this summer. And though we recognize his four boards, six assists, and two blocks aided Philly's winning effort on Wednesday, he should have been able to shoot better than 3-of-10 against the Nets' winless summer squad.
Prospect watch: Brooklyn swingman MarShon Brooks put up 18 points, three rebounds, two assists, and just one turnover. He's able to get to the rim almost at will, though his body control and ability to convert in traffic could use some improvement.
Tornike Shengelia broke out with 17 points in 27 minutes, going 5-of-9 from the floor. The 54th overall pick in 2012, Shengelia showed some combo forward skills on offense en route to his strongest showing of the week to date.
Tyshawn Taylor scored 12 points with three assists and two turnovers. The rookie point guard played off the ball, as Brooks tended to dominate it, for much of the day. His speed is an asset on both ends of the floor.
