Orlando Pro Summer League: Kim English Shoots Pistons Past Sixers

ORLANDO -- The Detroit Pistons closed Orlando Pro Summer League on Friday with a 71-67 victory against the Philadelphia 76ers in what one might charitably describe as a defensive struggle: the teams combined to shoot 37.4 percent.

Star player: Second-round Draft choice Kim English made a name for himself at Missouri as a deadeye shooter in his senior season, and he demonstrated that skill once again Friday. English, the No. 44 overall pick, scored 17 points in 32 minutes, going 6-of-11 from the floor and 4-of-7 from three-point distance. He stands a good chance of cracking Detroit's guard rotation, given the trade of Ben Gordon to the Charlotte Bobcats.

Honorable mention: Undrafted free-agent Devin Searcy posted his second consecutive double-double for Philadelphia, tallying 10 points and 12 boards in just 19 minutes. At 6-foot-10 and 226 pounds, the Dayton product has the height, but not the heft, of a prototypical power forward, but he makes up for that deficiency with some deceptive athleticism.

Disappointing player: Though he showed flashes of scoring punch on the first four days of Orlando Pro Summer League play, Sixers swingman Justin Holiday missed seven of his eight shots on Friday.

Dishonorable mention: Lavoy Allen had a strong rookie season for Philly, particularly on the defensive end, but continues to look out-of-sorts in Orlando. He committed four turnovers in 17 minutes, an unsightly figure for a big man, while recording six points and four boards.

Prospect watch: Undrafted free-agent Xavier Silas left the game with what may be a fractured skull. He was taken to an area hospital for evaluation.

Detroit forward Austin Daye did a bit of everything for Detroit, with 10 points, 11 rebounds, two assists, three steals, and a block. His improving off-the-dribble game, combined with his height on the wing, could make him a tough cover in his fourth season.

The Pistons gave second-year point guard Brandon Knight the day off. Casper Ware started in his place and dished seven assists. On the downside, he had fewer baskets (three) than blocks against (four).
