Kyrie Irving Injury: Cavs Guard In Cast, May Have Broken Hand

Kyrie Irving’s fantastic summer may already be over. The 2011-12 NBA Rookie of the Year is reportedly in a hand cast.

Team USA’s preparation for the 2012 London Olympics resulted in one injury to an exciting young American hooper, Blake Griffin. Another may have just gone down after departing from Team USA’s preparation efforts: SLAM’s Tzvi Twersky’s reports that Kyrie Irving sustained a hand injury during Las Vegas Summer League practice.

Irving was not named to the 2012 Team USA roster, which already had five guards, three ostensibly point guards, on it. But Irving, the 2011-12 NBA Rookie of the Year, pulled some Houdini moves on one awesome full-court play and looked like Team USA’s future as a member of the USA Select squad that scrimmaged against Team USA.

A broken bone in Irving’s hand might slow that rise down a bit, though it’s the sort of injury he should be recovered for in time to lead the Cavs in the 2012-13 NBA season. All it might ultimately cost Irving and Cleveland is a chance for him to build chemistry with rookie teammates Dion Waiters and Tyler Zeller prior to training camp.
