LAS VEGAS -- The Portland Trail Blazers were on their way to a loss anyway, but a scary situation involving second-year guard Nolan Smith happened late in the fourth quarter during Monday night's action in the Cox Pavilion at the Vegas Summer League.
Nolan Smith Hospitalized After Head Injury At Vegas Summer League
Trail Blazers guard Nolan Smith was hospitalized Monday after suffering a blow to the head during a game against the Rockets at Vegas Summer League.
With the game already out of reach, Smith went up for a layup and was fouled by Houston Rockets rookie Donatas Motiejunas at the bucket. From my vantage point, it seemed as though the contact was mostly to the body, but Smith stumbled a couple of steps past the baseline before collapsing in front of media row.
Team personnel immediately rushed to him, including head coach Kaleb Canales, teammate Wesley Matthews and Portland's director of NBA scouting Michael Born, who came out of the stands. After a few minutes of tests with team doctors, Smith was put on a stretcher and taken to a hospital for precautionary reasons.
The game was called soon after, with the Blazers losing 99-88.
