The Philadelphia 76ers and Tom Penn are "close" to an agreement to make Penn the new general manager of the franchise, according to Bob Cooney of the Philadelphia Daily News. Penn would take over for Rod Thorn, who is expected to move into an advisory role.

The 76ers appear to be closing in on hiring Tom Penn to be their new general manager.

Penn was the former vice president of basketball operations for the Portland Trail Blazers, but was fired in 2010, just before his boss, Kevin Pritchard, was also let go. Since then, Penn has appeared on ESPN, where he has helped break down the many salary-cap nuances that teams use to acquire talent. Penn was seen as the Blazers' salary-cap expert when he was there.
Thorn is in the final year of a three-year contract, but the deal also includes a stipulation that he would serve in an advisory role for five years after that. Many around the league believe that head coach Doug Collins has increased his power within the basketball operations.
