Malcolm Lee injury: Timberwolves guard out for season

The T-Wolves will be without young guard Malcolm Lee for the rest of the 2012-13 season. Can they survive with Alexey Shved at shooting guard?

Howard Smith-USA TODAY Sports

Minnesota Timberwolves shooting guard Malcolm Lee will miss the remainder of the 2012-13 season after undergoing a pair of surgeries next week, the team announced. The second-year guard out of UCLA is schedule to have knee surgery next Monday before having hip surgery on Wednesday.

Lee, 22, played in 16 games for the T-Wolves this season, making 12 starts. Playing only about 18 minutes per game, he averaged 4.9 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.3 assists while shooting 38 percent from the field and 33 percent from three-point range.

Originally drafted by the Chicago Bulls with the 43rd overall pick in the 2011 draft, Lee was traded to Minnesota in a draft-day deal along with guard Norris Cole in exchange for European big man Nikola Mirotic, selected by the T-Wolves in the first round of that draft.

With the Timberwolves battling a variety of injuries on the wings, including the absences of Brandon Roy and Chase Budinger in addition to Lee, Minnesota will likely continue to depend heavily on the Russian duo of Andrei Kirilenko and Alexey Shved.
