Rudy Gay trade rumors: Asking price too high for Raptors, according to report

The Toronto Raptors aren’t ready to give up what the Memphis Grizzlies are asking for in the ongoing saga of forward Rudy Gay.

The likelihood of the Toronto Raptors acquiring Rudy Gay from the Memphis Grizzlies is slipping away. According to TheStar.com's Doug Smith, Memphis' asking price for the forward is too steep for the Raptors to pull the trigger on a deal.

Smith reports that Memphis would like to acquire point guard Jose Calderon, rookie wing Terrence Ross and a big man from the team. Rookie Jonas Valanciunas' name has come up, according to the report, and that would mean Toronto would need to part with two future building blocks and a guard in Calderon who, while not indispensable with Kyle Lowry on the roster, is valuable.

As Smith notes and as CBS Sports’ Matt Moore points out, trading away young players doesn’t necessarily make the Raptors that much better either now or in the future.

Memphis has done its duty in finding out Gay's trade value. The first reports came about the Phoenix Suns trading away wing Jared Dudley in a package for Gay, which was seemingly a low asking-price. Now, it's escalated to teams like the Wizards considering a trade that gives up an asset for the future.

Reports earlier Monday had Washington involving rookie and third overall draft pick Bradley Beal in a trade for Gay.
