But Williams doesn’t know if he quite deserves the honor. His play has admittedly been subpar for the three-time All-Star, according to NetDaily.com.
“I just think there’s people playing better than me,” Williams said Tuesday.
His numbers haven’t been what many people -- Williams included -- hoped to see when Williams signed a five-year, $98 million deal to return to the Nets this summer. He has averaged 16.8 points on 40.9 percent field goal shooting and 7.7 assists this year, well below career averages of 17.6 points, 9.1 rebounds and 45.2 percent shooting.
Williams has struggled with wear and tear this year; he hasn’t taken a good amount of time to rest during the offseason in two years. He also didn’t fit in with former head coach Avery Johnson’s offense.
As of late, however, Williams has found his old form. Under coach P.J. Carlisimo, the Nets are on a six-game winning streak, much in part because of Williams’ play. They haven’t lost in 2013, and during that span he’s averaging 19.5 points, 8.3 assists and is shooting 46.8 percent from the floor.
