Suns coach Alvin Gentry hints at tanking in near future

The Suns are getting close to a lame duck season as the losses continue to pile on.

Phoenix Suns head coach Alvin Gentry is coming awfully close to shifting this season's focus from competing for a playoff spot to playing for next year, according to SB Nation's Bright Side of the Sun.

“I’d say we’re approaching that,” he said, adding that developing young talent needs to be a concern at some point.

Phoenix has struggled of late with recent streaks of five, six and seven losses during a dismal 23-game stretch. It’s usually taboo in any sport to begin to think about not worrying about results in-season, but Gentry was candid when he spoke about the plans for beyond this season.

“We have to look at the big picture,” he added. “Obviously if things don’t turn in a hurry here, that would be our top priority to start looking at younger players, putting guys in situations to see what they can do.”

The Suns are 13-27 and sit in fifth place in the Pacific Division. They’ve struggled on both ends of the floor, ranking 22nd in offensive rating with a 103.1 rating while ranking 26th on defense with a 107.9 mark. They are 27th in 3-point field goal percentage this season, shooting 33.3 percent.
