Lou Williams injury: Hawks guard out for season with torn ACL

Hawks guard Lou Williams’ 2012-13 season is over after MRI results revealed a torn ACL in his right knee. Who will replace the Hawks’ third-leading scorer?

Joshua S. Kelly-USA TODAY Sports

Atlanta Hawks guard Lou Williams will miss the remainder of the 2012-13 season with a torn ACL in his right knee, the team announced. MRI results revealed the injury after Williams left Friday night's game against the Brooklyn Nets with what was initially described as a knee sprain.

After going down with the injury Friday night, Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution tweeted that Williams was unable to put any weight on his right leg. There was initial hope that the injury was merely a sprain, rather than a complete tear of the ligament, but MRI results revealed the unfortunate news.

Williams had already been ruled out for Saturday's game against the San Antonio Spurs while doctors evaluated his MRI results, but it apparently didn't take them long to diagnose the problem.

For some perspective on a possible timetable for his return, Knicks guard Iman Shumpert had a similar injury last April and made his season debut this week. On the other hand, Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose went down around the same time as Shumpert, but he's still weeks away from getting back on the court.

Signed by Atlanta last offseason, Williams is under contract with the Hawks through the 2014-15 season. He had per game averages of 14.1 points and 3.6 assists in 39 games with the Hawks this season. In his absence, the likes of Devin Harris and rookie John Jenkins will presumably see more action.
