Mo Williams injury: Jazz PG to undergo surgery on Friday

Jazz point guard Mo Williams will miss at least six weeks after undergoing surgery to repair a thumb injury that occurred on Dec. 22.

USA TODAY Sports

Utah Jazz guard Mo Williams will undergo surgery and his right thumb on Friday and will miss at least six weeks, according to a team press release.

Williams injured the thumb during the second quarter of the Jazz's 105-89 loss to the Miami Heat on Dec. 22. An initial MRI was inconclusive in terms of the seriousness of the damage in Williams' thumb, but a second scan that took place on Wednesday determined the need for surgery. Williams will be force to wear a cast on the thumb for six weeks, after which he will be re-evaluated by Utah's medical staff.

A 10-year veteran out of Alabama, Williams is averaging 12.9 points and 6.7 assists this season while starting 24 games for the Jazz. Utah has struggled in his absence; including the loss to Miami, the Jazz are 1-4 without their floor general.

Fellow veteran guard Jamaal Tinsley has been starting in place of Williams for the Jazz, who take on the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET.
