The Miami Heat signed veteran big man Chris "Birdman" Andersen to a 10-day contract on Sunday, according to The Palm Beach Post's Ethan J. Skolnick. The move will give the team a look at another option that could help shore up its frontcourt.

The Miami Heat signed free-agent big man Chris Andersen on Sunday.

The team also signed forward Jarvis Varnado to his second 10-day contract on Sunday.
The Andersen signing is a calculated move to improve the team's interior defense. It came at the expense of Josh Harrellson, who was considered a candidate to fill one of the spots on the roster.
Andersen averaged 5.3 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game in 32 appearances with the Denver Nuggets last year, but he ultimately lost time to then-rookie forward Kenneth Faried. The 34-year-old would provide a boost in energy for Miami, though how coach Erik Spoelstra fits him into the rotation will be a challenge, considering the Heat's preference to play with a perimeter-oriented roster.
Andersen, the 11-year veteran, worked out for the Heat on Jan. 8, and he hasn’t played in almost a year.
