Anderson Varejao injury: Cavs big man out for season with blood clot

The Cleveland Cavaliers announced on Monday that Anderson Varejao is out for the season after developing a blood clot.

Anderson Varejao will miss the remainder of the Cleveland Cavaliers' 2012-13 season after developing a blood clot that a team release described as a "small right lower lung pulmonary embolism." The big man was admitted to the Cleveland Clinic on Thursday and is being given blood thinners.

Varejao will be monitored for the next few days at the world renowned clinic before being released, but he will remain on blood thinning medication for approximately three months.

Cavaliers General Manager Chris Grant released the following statement:

“Clearly our players’ health is our top concern and we are disappointed for Anderson, and his family. We know what a competitor he is and how much he wants to be on the court helping his teammates. In the meantime, he has our full support and we look forward to welcoming him back as he recovers.”

Varejao was leading the NBA in rebounding, averaging 14.4 per game to go with 14.1 points per game. He played in 25 games this year before his last game, a Dec. 18 contest against the Toronto Raptors. A knee injury led to a surgery earlier in January that called for a recovery period of 6-8 weeks.

The nine-year veteran has career averages of 7.7 points and 7.6 rebounds per game.
