The incident in question occurred during Minnesota's 113-98 loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Jan. 14. The fine comes after he was warned on Nov. 5 for a play where he flailed his arms backward in an exaggerated manner after a marginal amount of contact occurred between he and Sacramento Kings guard Jimmer Ferdette.
The league decided to crack down on cases such as these after multiple incidents over the last several seasons began to affect the outcome of games.
Barea, a third-year player, was one of the first two players warned under the new system, and he's the third player to receive a fine for flopping. Brooklyn Nets forwards Gerald Wallace and Reggie Evans are the other two.
In total, 12 players have been warned by the NBA. The 2012-13 season the first year that the guidelines to counter flopping in the NBA have been implemented.
