Royce White close to re-joining Rockets

Royce White and the Rockets are making progress on an agreement regarding how to deal with the forward’s anxiety disorder. Will the rookie finally hit the court soon?

Thomas Campbell-US PRESSWIRE

The Houston Rockets and forward Royce White have neared an agreement that will allow the rookie to re-join the organization next month, Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle reports. White plans to report to Houston's D-League affiliate, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, on Feb. 11, pending the completion of paperwork with the franchise.

White, the 16th overall pick in last year’s draft, hasn’t appeared in a professional basketball game yet due to his personal concerns with how his career will impact his well-publicized anxiety disorder. He’s been working with the Rockets to establish a protocol for dealing with his anxiety, but it’s taken a while for both sides to deal with his unique circumstances.

After White refused an assignment to the D-League earlier this month, the Rockets decided to suspend White indefinitely, “for refusing to provide services as required by his Uniform Player Contract.”

Under the written agreement being signed by White and the Rockets, “key elements of the protocols,” will be put into place. These are things that White had initially wanted to have in his contract with the franchise, but the Rockets have been hesitant to provide White with everything he’s asked for.

A key sticking point, the ability to defer decision-making on White’s status to a person outside the organization, will be not granted by the Rockets under the current agreement.

It’s unclear when the Rockets will make an official announcement regarding White’s situation, but it’s obvious that both sides are making progress.
