Dwight Howard regrets complaining about touches

Los Angeles Lakers center Dwight Howard apologized for complaining about his number of shot attempts.

USA TODAY Sports

Two days after he'd emphasized to reporters that he took just five shot attempts in a loss to the Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Lakers center Dwight Howard rescinded his plea for more touches on Wednesday and even admitted he was being immature for doing so.

After a Lakers shootaround, Howard said that he needed to get back to worrying about his defense and effort. Part of that is making sure he doesn't get caught up in the offensive statistics, according to InsideSoCal.com.

“Sometimes I get caught up in stats,” Howard said. “Those stats don’t determine games. I can affect the game without scoring the ball. I have to get back to doing that. It’s not about how many points. I’ve been immature in the past thinking it’s about shots because that’s what people want to see and they’re talking about points and how many times you score. For me, it’s not even about scoring.”

Howard, all of a sudden the center of trade speculation for the second year in a row, also echoed head coach Mike D’Antoni’s stance of a week ago. He said it was time to consider the upcoming schedule as a new season, and it’ll have to be if the Lakers hope to make a push for postseason contention.

Los Angeles is currently 12th place in the Western Conference, and Howard’s role as a paint presence on the defensive end has begun to take negative hits as the team struggles to make stops.
