Virginia Beach officials are waiting to hear if a deal is struck between Comcast and the Sacramento Kings before moving forward with plans for a new basketball arena.

The next step in bringing a new basketball arena to Virginia Beach can’t be taken until Comcast strikes a deal with the Kings to bring the franchise to the East Coast.

City officials would like to take their arena proposal to the General Assembly when it meets beginning next Wednesday, but their ability to do so is contingent on whether a deal is in place to relocate the Kings to Virginia Beach.
“A big part of the trouble is we don’t have a finalized deal, so, until we get that information, it’s difficult to get legislation in,” said Virginia beach lobbyist Bob Matthias.
Under the proposed plan, the state would be asked to fund $150 million of the $346 million price tag; Comcast-Spectacor would operate the arena. Virginia Beach’s City Council voted 9-2 in support of the plan at a meeting last month.
The Kings, who had a new arena deal in Sacramento fall through last year, have until March to file for relocation.
