Rudy Gay rumors: Forward could reportedly be traded without third team

The Memphis Grizzlies and Toronto Raptors are reportedly getting closer to a deal involving Rudy Gay, and they might not even need a third team to get it done.

The Memphis Grizzlies are reportedly close to finalizing a deal that would send forward Rudy Gay to the Toronto Raptors, according to Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski. A final framework could be completed by Wednesday night, and a deal is expected to include Raptors point guard Jose Calderon and forward Ed Davis.

Ron Tillery of the Memphis Commercial Appeal also reports that a deal with the Raptors is close, and the sides are reportedly almost done finding a third team to be included in the trade. However, Tillery reports that there are two alternative deals on the table if an agreement with Toronto cannot be reached by the end of this weekend.

While it has long been thought that the two franchises would need a third team to complete a deal, Wojnarowski reports that there have been scenarios discussed that involved just the two teams.

With Gay, Toronto would add a All-Star caliber player who can create his own shot. They have backup point guard Kyle Lowry able to step into the starting point guard role should Calderon be traded, as expected. Calderon and his $10.5 million expiring contract is likely the piece being shopped to a third team.
